My review follows Finn’s book blurb found on Amazon. “It’s April of , and World War I has reached Elizabeth’s family on their wheat farm in North Dakota. †I found this novel to be a touching and interesting read. The pace is frantic at one point when Elizabeth, at a young tender age, must care for two sick siblings, her mother in labor, one farmhand down with a bad back, and she must take care of all of them, keep warm fires going as it is winter and Christmas time, feed the animals, gather eggs, and learn how to cook.
Finn has done an amazing job of bringing out the best in Elizabeth as well as the rich history and the surrounds of, and culture of the time, during World War I. In this quick read, we come to understand how society was during this traumatic time in the USA – from that perspective of a young girl. Five stars!! Elizabeth's War is a delightful coming of age YA story that revolves around 11 year old Elizabeth and her family who must undertake almost impossible odds during WW1. The story spans the time from when the men leave for war, until the end when two men return and one does not. Elizabeth takes on farm and family duties she'd never had to undertake. She helps with the war effort, takes on additonal family chores learns to cook and sew gardening and animal care.
The most crucial of these tasks happens when her mother gives birth, while a snow storm rages, no one else in the house and Elizabeth must help her mother deliver the baby. Experience and education help her along. A negative experience occurred when Elizabeth got cold feet in helping the vet deliver her mare's foal. Elizabeth froze and the foal died. But then, with the negative comes the positive. She's picked up a medical book that explains the story of childbirth. She's a quick study. Then, there's passion for family, especially her mother, and the realization that when life depends on it, there's no backing away. This story was delightful with laugh-out-loud funny experiences, joy and some truly sad.
The author shows family's loyalty and Elizabeth must put personal feelings aside and grow up-fast. It's truly a "coming-of-age" story. Though written for young readers, Elizabeth’s War is a story that has appeal to all ages. Many of the scenes were very familiar to me because I faced similar challenges as a child. Farm life can be difficult, and for Elizabeth, it was particularly harsh because of World War I. Her father and then her brother left to serve in the war, and she had to manage one complicated situation after another on the farm, even though she was only eleven. Elizabeth’s War helps young readers understand the impact of war on families. It makes war real. And, the book beautifully shows how a person can summon courage in the time of need.
Young Elizabeth surmounts her fear and learns to run a household even though she is just a child. And, when her mom goes into labor, Elizabeth helps deliver the baby. Kudos to D. L Finn for effectively capturing the struggles of farm life during World War I and for showing us the beautiful human potential. In this family drama set in a rural town during WWI, young Elizabeth has no choice but to assume daunting responsibilities when her father and brother have been called away. Left to care for two sick siblings, her pregnant mother who goes into labor, an injured farmhand, and the farm, Elizabeth’s challenges are enormous.
The story is fast paced and richly woven into the history of the period, including the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Author D. Finn has done a fine job melding the trials and triumphs of family, community and country in Elizabeth’s War. Stevens, author of award-winning picture book AMAZING MATILDA Amazing Matilda Children's Literature : The Tale of A Monarch Butterfly and other books for children and adults. A heart-warming story that takes place during WWI and how one family is affected by it. The central character, Elizabeth is an 11 year old who must grow up fast as she takes over more and more responsibilities. Cooking, cleaning, tending farm animals, and helping her pregnant mother are just some of her responsibilities. Well-written and a fast read. It's a quick read, but it still manages to capture a sort of essence that doesn't leave you feeling like it was incomplete. It's easy to relate to the main character and the details about the home life during World War I give a sense of heartache just knowing that this is probably what life was for the women and children left at home while men went off to fight.
